Time graph for Amy Bento's Advanced Step Challenge 3
A high-impact, high-intensity workout that features a fast-paced mix of athletic-style combos. No “girly” hip shakes here — this program gets its complexity from an endless variety of powerful, non-stop combinations (“turn step, repeater, jack, pivot, kick, chassé ... now do it again on the left side”). It’s all taught add-on style with new movements and new directional changes added into the previous patterns (including both sideways and toward-the-TV step positions). The workout ends with a well-deserved series of long, deep stretches. The second program is all abwork; it’s divided into two segments that use different equipment to challenge your core in different ways. The toning requires a resistance band and a kettlebell (or a dumbbell). ©2008. DVD has: 6 premixes (60 to 119 min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Amy Bento's Advanced Step Challenge 3

The Clear Leader in Step Workouts
Nothing compares to Amy; I love this challenge as much as I love ASC1 and ASC2. I was a little frustrated when I first attempted it, because I had trouble with the box turn in combo 2; I'm glad I kept at it because this workout makes me feel fantastic. This is especially true during those times when I've fallen off my diet plan; ASC3 is a super calorie burner. I was doing this twice a week, but I'm adding some new Patrick G. videos for variety, until Amy hopefully finishes ASC4. This is definitely an advanced workout and one that stays in my rotation. - posted by Anita on 11/13/2008
One of Amy's Best
I have ASC1 and thought it was just "okay." After some contemplation and based on the reviews, I decided to try ASC3. I have several of Amy's DVDs and this is by far the best. The step complexity is similar to ASC1, but the flow is much smoother and there aren't moves that are verging on being unsafe, like there were in ASC1. The video is chaptered quite nicely. I've only done the ab section that uses the kettlebell and I really like it. It's different than the traditional ab workout. This is worth every penny and is definitely a keeper. - posted by Maureen K on 10/19/2008
Oh My!! Another FUNtastic, High Energy Workout!!!
Amy delivers again!! She's such a class act!! I just love, Love, LOVE her step workouts!!! This is another fun, full wattage, high energy, sweatfest!! Anybody who knows Amy's step knows that when she says advanced she means it. Her choreography is again so much fun and very creative and complex (somewhat less complex than ASC2 though). And, I LOVE that she always puts great, funkin, driving music to it that just drives you to keep going. It's also high energy and will make you sweat. I also love that she always puts in a low impact modifier (Toni, I believe) for anybody who has to protect their knees or needs to keep it low key. Sometime's I need to do this for myself so it's great to see that there are other options for a move to take it down a notch. I love the length of it so I have the option for a longer or shorter workout. You need to be patient learning Amy's step and I preview, preview, preview to learn it before I attempt it. I find that when I finally breakdown the code to her step patterning by watching it, then doing it comes much more smoothly. I find this is the best approach for me. But when I love something so much I'm willing to take the extra time to learn it. And find that it's such an accomplishment!! Being able to master Amy's step feels like I've hit the BIG TIMES!! I love that she's included premixes and stretching and abs. However, I kind of wished that she snuck in some circuit premixes like she did on ASC2 using Slo-Mo (that was AWESOME and incredibly giving of her — she even put almost all of her Slo-Mo after the credits too — didn't I tell you she's a class act!). I would have loved it if she had done some circuit premixes with All Pump Xtreme. That would have been awesome!! For all who can handle complex high energy step and can handle the learning curve, get this workout, you won't regret!! - posted by Kim on 9/21/2008
Great Workout
I've got to agree with everyone else here. It's really a great workout. Definitely for the advanced and not for the choreography challenged. There are so few advanced cardio workouts that really get my heartrate up without resorting to intervals so this workout is really appreciated. I actually spent a few evenings learning the combos (one combo per night for about 10-15 min) so that when I did the workout through, I got it on the first try. I usually have no problem getting choreography right away but I learned my lesson with ASC2. Amy just doesn't do enough breakdown to get it on your first try. My one gripe is that the workout is really long. I like my workouts to be about an hour so I find that this is a bit long (73 minutes without the stretch). I feel that she could have done with one or two less repititions of each combo. But that's my personal preference so I would not let it affect my rating. - posted by Adina on 9/16/2008
Amy's Step is the BEST!!!
This woman KNOWS who she is as an instructor and has consistently delivered athletic, creative, complex but not too complex, tough, and FUN step routines. ASC3 is no different from the first two except it's even better! This workout has a great flow and the choreography and music are motivating. I find Amy's cueing to be spot on, instead of too any advanced descriptions of upcoming moves that get so old to listen to every time you do the workout. I enjoy the little bit of kickbox flare thrown in a few of the combo's. There is a nice tutorial of the more tricky moves. There are two ab workouts included but this workout is worth the money for the fresh, fun step routine alone! I like the athletic stretch which can be easily modified and taken to the floor for those who are too tired to balance. If I had more thumbs than two, I'd put them up for ASC3. She is simply THE BEST when it comes to step!!! - posted by Angela on 9/12/2008
Best Amy Ever
I have had this DVD for one week and it is definately my new favorite. I get bored very easily and am continuously trying to find workouts that keep my interest and I can tell this will do that! I have been a long time fan of Amy but there is just something about the energy of this one that makes me want to do it over and over!! Don't give up on the coreography-you will get it and have SO MUCH FUN doing it! - posted by Jen on 9/8/2008
Fun, Fun, Fun!
Although I have enjoyed the other two Advanced Step Challenge workouts, #3 is my absolute favoite! The choreography is fun to do. Some of the moves remind me of Tap Less Step More by Deirdre Morris. The time flies by in the 67 minute aerobic segment. The 2 ab segments and the stretch are interesting, different, and enjoyable. Amy brings lots of positive energy to the workout. A wonderful advanced step experience! - posted by Susan on 9/6/2008
Fantastic!!
I agree that this is Amy's best step workout yet! The choreography is challenging, the workout is tough but it is fun and Amy keeps you going!! She is so motivational! I love getting an advanced workout but also having lots of fun while sweating!! - posted by Kim on 9/6/2008
Excellent Step Workout!
This step workout is definitely challenging and loads of fun! I did the tutorial prior to doing the workout and found that the tutorial was very helpful. I was able to do the step workout completely without stopping my second time through. The power up segment adds intensity to the workout at just the right time. I have also done one of the pre-mixes and found it to be fun! The music was very good. I enjoyed the kettlebell Abs section ( I used a 15 lb kettlebell) and it was challenging. I particularly enjoyed the lengthy stretch segment in this DVD. Amy's cueing was excellent and her warm and playful personality increased the enjoyment factor. I would definitely recommend this workout to any advanced exercise enthusiast who enjoys a good step workout! I would also recommend Advanced Step Challenge 2. - posted by Denise on 9/4/2008
I love ASC3!!!
This is Amy's best step workout! I loved ASC2 but this one is now my favorite. I thought the choreography was easier to learn in this one than ASC2. Amy does not waste time by over braking down the moves and I love that about her step workouts. Remember this is an advanced workout. You will not be disappointed in this workout. Good job Amy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - posted by Wendy on 9/3/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
