Time graph for Kathy Smith's Super Slimdown Circuit
Three complete workouts: An energetic cardio interval program and two targeted toning workouts. It’s a comprehensive combination that will burn fat and reshape your body. “Peak Fat Burning” features two-minute energy bursts followed by slower two-minute recovery routines. This anaerobic/aerobic blend increases overall intensity while avoiding exercise “burn out.” Nothing too fancy, the routines range from chassés and taps to double jacks and step touches. The toning workouts, “Secrets to a Great Upper Body” and “Secrets to a Great Lower Body,” use the “low-rep overload” technique. You’ll maximize the sculpting by working each muscle to its point of fatigue (by carefully selecting the ideal resistance/weight level and limiting the rest period between sets). These exercises all combine floor, seated and standing weight routines. With just 12-16 reps, Kathy alternates the routines while maintaining the focus on one area. Blends flawless technique with Kathy’s caring attitude and a light music soundtrack. Requires two sets of dumbbells (e.g. 3 and 5 lbs.). ©1993 & 1996. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Kathy Smith's Super Slimdown Circuit

Love the Peak Fat Burning!
I also had this on VHS and did it over and over.. I'm still doing it about once a week because I sweat like mad. Kathy Smith is great, doesn't take herself too seriously, you believe she's enjoying herself while she works out and is in amazing shape. Thank you for telling us what the mixes are Collage, because I would not have bought this had I not known that the Peak Fat Burning was on it as I have both Lift Weights to Lose Weight dvds. Love the non-tricky heart-raising Aerobic workout - Excellent!
I bought this just to get the "Peak Fat Burning” workout. (I had on VHS) This is a great, easy to follow, but heart raising workout without tricky moves. I do alot of Jari Love and Cathe tapes for weightlifting but need to mix it up with some cardio. I like this one and Tae Bo Ultimate. I cannot stand tricky, choreographed moves - which this is not. This is great also because it focuses on intervals which is the best way to burn fat. I have never done the two toning segments of this DVD, but recommend it just for the cardio. - posted by Linda on 4/27/2008
Weight Training with Kathy Smith
These workouts are GREAT on explanation, form, technique, and slow enough to go heavy (or build up if you are a beginner). It does not have the driving techno beat that I prefer, but for a former exerciser trying to get back to it, I have been doing this DVD working myself back up to the Jari Love level. Get Ripped is my goal and Kathy is the perfect intermediate step to get there. I do one each day; upper, lower, aerobics, then repeat. In another month I should be ready to go with the Get Ripped series that I ordered a while back but was too out of shape to finish them. Thanks Collage, Kathy and Jari (you're next)! :) - posted by Lisa on 2/16/2008
Where's the beat
I bought this thinking I could get another good set of upper body/lower body strength training routines, but used the "Great Secrets" workouts once and never again. Why The background music has no discernable beat to help you time your reps and make sure you do them at an even pace, or do the same number on each side. Sure, you can turn your head and watch the screen the whole time, but this can cause you to break form, not to mention get a stiff neck. I prefer her Lift Weights to Lose Weight, because you get a complete, no-nonsense strength workout for upper and lower body in a shorter period of time. - posted by Amanda on 1/24/2008

Great weight workouts
I am so glad that the two weight workouts are finally available on dvd. When I want straighforward weight workouts that don't miss a single muscle group, these are the two that I turn to. I often do them together as a total body workout. I think this is one of the best weight workout sets on the market and they're full of good information as well. - posted by Jane P. on 2/24/2007
Great Exercises
Great exercises, however, the endless commercials for her other DVDs are very irritating. - posted by Marlene Smith on 11/2/2006
FINALLY!
I've always liked the GST Upper/lower body videos, but I just don't reach for them since they are VHS. I kept mine though, but always wished they were on dvd. Now finally they are and I am going to get these. These are my best stand buys when it comes to leg or upper body workouts. I've been doing pilates/yoga only, but now that these on disc thats even better. The calf workout alone on this is worth purchase. Calves are something most workouts don't really address. - posted by Tere on 6/12/2006
At Last! One of My Favorite Kathy Smith Workouts on DVD
The Kathy Smith workout I did most was "Secrets to a Great Upper Body." It provided a quiet, back-to-basics approach to upper body weight training in a short period of time. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done. (I like Tammilee Webb's "I Want that Body" upper body weight training workout for the same reason.) This workout has finally been released on DVD --- as well as the floor cardio workout, which requires no equipment and is a no-frills but effective workout for intermediate exercisers. I'm not a fan of the lower body workout, but that's just me. I use the upper body workout so often that this DVD has paid for itself many times over already.Thumbs up. - posted by Michelle E. on 6/10/2006
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
