Time graph for The Firm: Dangerous Curves Ahead
Fast-paced aerobics alternated with dumbbell and resistance band toning (the DVD comes with a loop-style band). It’s a balanced blend precisely structured to keep your heart rate up as it builds lean, shapely muscles (“dangerous curves”). Each interval lasts about eight minutes — long enough to truly challenge your body, short enough to keep you motivated. The aerobic segments are exceptionally varied — everything from mambos and pivots to jump ropes and power squats. The classic Firm-style toning works your lower body with the band, your upper body with dumbbells (and ends with ab-focused floorwork). Expert cuing by Alison Davis. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2008. DVD has: 3 premixes (26 to 34 min. alternate workouts).

The Firm: Dangerous Curves Ahead

Really Good Cardio! Mediocre Sculpt
I love the cardio in this workout! It's high impact and segment 2 is pretty intense. It's fun and diverse but easy to follow. I love using the Express Cardio option as an add on. The sculpting, however, is just mediocre. The band they supply you with is less stretchy than the one shown, and the exercises keep the sweat going but don't really do much otherwise (not enough reps, etc). It's a fantastic core workout, as many of the exercises are compound and involve balance, but I wouldn't recommend this for the caliber of body sculpting you can get with older AWT Firms. And the music is nearly inaudible. Fantastic instruction, though, and the cardio makes this one a keeper. - posted by Sam on 11/17/2008
Higher impact high on calories
The impact of this workout is higher but you get a lot of calorie burning out of it. The energy I've gotten from doing this 2 to 3 days a week is great! Good intervals. I usually like heavier weights but am fine with the lighter dumbbells in this DVD. - posted by Sue on 11/12/2008
Effective
The cardio and weight intervals keep the sweat going. Nice total body workout. It's a keeper for getting some good exercise done in an efficient way. - posted by Rene on 11/12/2008
The Best All Over Workout
I love this workout! It has many new moves and keeps my heart racing throughout. I always consider FIRM workouts to be a little on the easy side, but this one ramps up the challenge, while keeping the moves simple. This is important to me since I am not interested in complicated steps. It's fast paced and you can choose between 30, 35 and 55 minute workouts. - posted by Jane on 11/8/2008
A good Workout.
I really liked this workout. It has fun cardio and the sculpting sections are not bad either. I did not use the band it came with. I used a different band that is thick and is a heavier resistance then the one it came with and I really felt it in my legs. Alison does a good job with this one. I wish the music was louder. - posted by Wendy on 11/2/2008
I hope I will come to love this workout!
I have to say I love the basic cardio in this workout, and the plyo moves. But for some reason it did not keep my heart rate up enough. I know this will definitely be a good add on to other cardio workouts. - posted by Mandee on 10/27/2008
Band switcheroo!
I love the Firm and Allison is my favorite instructor, but one factor really ruined this workout for me. The green band that comes with the DVD is different than the yellow one that the cast uses in the workout. The green band is pictured on the cover, but they actually use a yellow band that obviously has less resitance while demonstrating the exercises. There are a couple of moves that I'll never be able to do with the green band such as the side plank where you lift your top leg. Now I'll have to go out and buy my own separate band so I can use the DVD. The cardio was good - I think the section with the ski moves was the most difficult Firm cardio I've ever done. - posted by Barbara V on 10/24/2008
Great except for one thing
I like this DVD but find I am very distracted by the on-screen participants. I find it motivating when the other "exercisers" look like they have benefitted from doing the work-out. On this DVD Alison has a great body (and is an awesome instructor). Although is is overall a fun workout I wish the visual experience were more pleasant. - posted by Laura on 10/23/2008
Great workout!--but the band? Not so much.
I have been working out with The Firm for about 5 years now, and I have always been pleased with their movies. This one is no disappointment. The cardio session are my personal favorite. Sadly, though, the band broke after the first time I used it. I still do the workout without the band, but I have to admit, that was pretty frustrating. - posted by Liz on 10/9/2008
Holy Cow
I've been exercising with the Firm for about 8 years. I can't believe the intensity of this workout. Wow. I love it. My heart was pumping the whole time and the cardio is super challenging. While using the loop, I felt like it was sooo easy....until the next day my entire body was aching. I could tell I worked a ton of muscles that aren't usually worked using traditional dumbells. My only complaint is the video is long compared to other Firm videos, and I am limited on exercise time. Sure, you can break it down, but I am a bit spoiled by being able to get a total body workout from the Firm in 45 minutes. It is still a 5 star video, I am just bummed at the length of it for the complete workout. Otherwise, it's great! - posted by Gigi on 10/3/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
