Time graph for The Firm: Upper Body & Standing Legs
Two complete programs; they were originally released as separate VHS tapes. Both are carefully re-edited from segments of The Classic Firm series. You get multiple instructors and multiple techniques. "The Firm Standing Legs" has lots of squats and lunges -- sometimes weights are also used to tone your upper body. "The Firm Upper Body" has a variety of intermediate-level standing and floor moves. Some also tone your lower body with squats and lunges often using dumbbells for added resistance. They’re filmed in a luxurious mansion with exceptional production values; just watching these videos is motivating. Both programs uses 2 to 3 sets of dumbbells so you can match the ideal weight level to each of the exercises as the routines change. "Standing Legs" also requires an 8" to 14" step and ankle weights and/or a barbell are suggested for advanced exercisers. ©1994. VHS is "Standing Legs" only. DVD has: Chapter menus.

The Firm: Upper Body & Standing Legs

I love this workout, but I knew what I was getting.
I feel bad for the poster that thought this was something new. Over 10 years ago, I bought a Firm Parts video and they had an "instructor" who was really nothing more than an announcer. Having said that, the workout is really tough! Is Susan Harris really doing french press with 30 lbs? God, she's strong. Janet Jones Gretzky still looks incredibly beautiful, she's won the genetic lottery. - posted by Robin on 11/10/2008
Terrific workouts--NOT dangerous!
I have been a devoted Firmie for years now and I can tell you that these are NOT dangerous workouts. The key to doing lunges, as the Firm will tell you, is proper form--which means not letting your knees extend past your toes as you lunge. You also only lunge as far down as you are comfortable, and the Firm urges beginners to do only shallow lunges. In fact, my knees have been strengthened since I started Firming years ago, not weakened in any way. They used to hurt when I first began working out, and now they never do. As far as the packaging goes, the Firm is not deceitful on this. This particular package (along with Tough Tape 2 and 5 Day Abs among others) is part of the Firm Parts Series, which means that the Firm takes parts of various Firm workouts and puts them together to form compilations which focus mainly on a particular body part (for example, the upper body or the lower body as in this case). These workouts are very effective and time efficient. I have tried many other instructors including Cathe, Amy Bento, even the newer "pink" Firms. But in my opinion, nothing compares to the older Firms and I always go back to them as they have never failed to give me great results! - posted by Robin on 10/12/2008
Dangerous/ripoff
I bought this DVD for weight strengthening. This DVD is basically old Firm video's (I have them all-purchased over 10 years ago)edited-spliced... to look like it is something new. Even the cover is deceiving as these instructors are only there for the transitions.(and to make one realize they could NEVER have the bodies these women have!!) to the old workouts. Janet Gretsky!! It's been over 15 years since anyone has seen her. The compilation of legwork and all the lunges are extremely dangerous to the knees (I am a Chiropractor).I am disdappointed and feel ripped off- and I will not do the legwork again because there is too much repetition of the same lunges. (they use several old videos and there is just too much of the same old thing.I would recommend the Firm 3 in one, or other newer DVD's.I am tired of buying what I believe are new Firm workouts, only to see a new package and clips from old ones. - posted by DC on 10/3/2008
Brings you to your knees
I used this video when it first came out, but then my VCR broke years later and we replaced it with a DVD player. I recently ordered it for my DVD player and I was so glad! I had forgotten what an incredible workout it is. The Standing Legs portion is harder than the Upper Body and more intense. It is very dated, but one of the very best lower body sculpting tapes out there in such a short amount of time. Just ignore the cheese factor and your lower body will thank you :-). It should be included in your rotation. It uses a barbell also although not necessary. Great tape! - posted by Cindie on 9/28/2008
Kick Ass Workout!!
I bought The FIRM parts four pack which included Tough Tape 2, Standing Legs, Upper Body and 5 Day Abs. Both Standing legs and upper body are killer workouts. I sweat buckets everytime I do these. It may look a little cheesy and dated, but you will quickly get over that once you realize how tough these workouts really are. You will be toned and tight. The original release of these videos aren't compilations so I like the original tapes better. Using these tapes (and other older Firm tapes) got me in the BEST shape of my life. Newer Firms (although still pretty good) can't hold a candle to the classic tapes. You will not be disappointed!!! - posted by Elle on 6/11/2008
After all these years, this workout still criples me!
I have been using Standing Legs on and off for 11 years. Sure it looks a little cheezy, but it gets results fast. The endless combination of lunges, squats, step-ups, and crazy hover squats will shape your legs in no time. Even if this is not considered cardio. You will get cardio, you will sweat like a pig and get a phenomenal workout. I have tried everything, I have almost every Firm tape and also Jari Love. But this is the best legs exercise. As for inner thigh, I substitue some of the regular squats with plie squats. You will feel it the next day no matter how many times you do it. Upper Body is okay and works well. - posted by Patrice on 5/14/2008
A great pair of workouts
I have done the Firm workouts since 1991 and these two workouts are phenomenal! Upper Body provides a complete upper body workout--boasting a whopping 56 pushups (which I do military style)--and Standing Legs has an astounding variety of leg exercises--using the tall step, barbell, and ankle weights. While neither workout contains abdominal work, they each contain a great warmup and thorough cool down. Work these in between any full-body workouts; your body will be better for it. - posted by Joy on 2/5/2008
Ignore the cheese factor and you'll get a hard workout!
This workout was high on the cheesey music and barbie doll like instructors. Those barbies kicked my a. My legs were shaking at the end! I'll add this each week as I can't remember getting such an intense workout from any of my other Firm and non Firm videos. - posted by MAE on 2/1/2008
Get over the leotards!
I'm buying this leg workout on DVD after using the tape for years. Up the weights as you advance (I use 15-pound dumbells throughout and skip the upper body bits), and there's nothing like this routine to tone, strengthen, and make you work hard. Aerobic too. No matter what I do on machines at the gym, this will cripple me if I haven't done it for a few weeks! - posted by Laura on 11/25/2007
they might be "old school", but they work
Quite simply, two of the best toning workouts on the market today. The Firm set the standard and paved the way for others like Cathe F. and Jari Love. These older workouts are much better than the newer Firms. Don't let the leotards and cheesy music fool you - they're tough. - posted by BarbaraW on 10/4/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
